Minutes Director’s Meeting – June 6, 2007

Mission: To identify lake issues affecting our
members and pursue resolution with the responsible
organizations.

Inspirational Reading:
Bill Bryant gave an inspirational reading.
Guest Introductions:
Brunswick County - Leonard Turner, Sarah A. P. Raible, Steven
Austin. Warren County - Joe Chaney, Bill La Monte, George Kimble,
Bill Hoofnagle, Serf Guerra. Mecklenburg County - Patrick Dempsey,
Vernon Wilson. Northampton County - Nancy Maguire, Julie Jolly,
Bruce Johnson, Becky Newton and Lavetta Johnson from Pine View Subdivision.
During the visitor introductions Sarah A. P. Raible gave a short overview of a
project being pursued by many citizens of Brunswick County to have an
additional library in the lake community of Gasburg, VA.

Johnna Fross, Bill Lindenmuth, Bill Bryant and Barbara Burgdoerfer.
Directors Absent:
Jay Baker and Doug Hughes.
Guest Speaker:
There was no guest speaker today to give the LGA more time to prepare for the
Annual Meeting this Saturday, June 9, 2007.
Secretary’s Report -
Joee Hoxter
The May 2, 2007 Board revised minutes were
approved as reported.
Joee requested all Chairs send her the annual
report for their committee prior to Saturday.
Larry requested that all annual info be sent
to all Directors.
Treasurer’s Report
- Bill Lindenmuth
The May 2007 Financial Statements were
approved as reported.
The Treasurer also indicated that as of this
month the LGA is ahead of it’s budget plans, expenditures are behind and new
membership income is up with a 5% interest income on savings.
Committee Reports
–
Lake Environment
– Bill Lindenmuth
“Revegitate the Lake” programs are being
examined. The Corps of Engineers is concerned with the lake levels with the
continued lack of rain. The training for LEM’s (Lake Environment Monitors)
will be available shortly with new equipment. This may take place in
Lawrenceville. The complete report is on file.
Safety
– Jack Saunders
Jack indicated that the committee will
continue to speak with law enforcement agencies on a variety of lake issues.
Also, the possibility of Safe Boating laws in North Carolina continues to be
explored with lawmakers and officials. The complete report is on file.
Aquatic Weed Management
– Bob Etheridge
Jack Saunders attended a meeting in Raleigh
and discussed lake related issues. North Carolina Water Quality will follow
up on action items from those discussions. Chris cheek has been invited to
attend an LGA meeting to update the membership on the progress of the PLM
efforts during this 2007 season. The complete report is on file.
Membership Development
– David Duxbury
The committee goal to increase membership this
year was 10%, we reached 3%. We still feel confident about our impact this
year. When calls are made to our former members, they want to discuss lake
issues and ultimately renew their membership. Also, the committee has
excellent representation at area Flea Markets and fairs. A complete report is

Public Affairs
- John Slaton
We continue to provide our organization with
guest speakers, information on issues involving zoning, county property taxes,
and county budgets. Commissioner Ross read the LGA priorities at the last
Warren County Commissioner’s meeting. Larry discussed key guest speakers for
the Annual Meeting on Saturday, June 9, 2007 with the suggestion that a
representative from PLM would be present to give comments on the progress of
the 2007 season approach on reducing hydrilla in the planned areas on Lake
Gaston. The complete report is on file.
Planning and Development
– Jack Saunders
Jack Saunders gave a brief report. He
indicated that the committee has just been organized and will begin it’s study
of the Warren County and Brunswick County land plans (land usage, zoning, any
public planning documents). Our President reiterated anyone interested on the
LGA membership rolls or in our lake community may join the committee. We are
open for new input and ideas. Moira Underwood, the Executive Director, read
the mission statement of the Planning & Development Committee. The complete

Old Business:
VA & NC Safe Boating activities update
– Pete Deschenes & John Slaton
The State of Virginia is in the process of
drafting procedures necessary to implement the new DGIF law in 2008. They
are getting input from a variety of professional sources including the United
States Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Power Squadron. The State of North
Carolina has introduced a similar bill. There is progress being made by
contacts on Lake Norman and a few legislative officials. At this time a bill
is still in House Committee – it is still alive.
Brunswick County LGWCC funding update
– John Cataldo
John Cataldo organized the presentation for
the Brunswick County Board of Supervisors. A wide range of points of view
were presented and the Board decided to renew it’s commitment of submitting $
116,000. to the LGWCC budget towards weeds control on Lake Gaston. Support of
the LGA position was strong throughout the lake community. The PLM may now
move forward with the financial commitment from all five counties has become a
reality.
Other Old Business
– Pete Deschenes
Pete Deschenes reported that he wrote to Mayor
Whay as a private individual in support of the reclassification of the fire
districts in Warren County.
New Business

LGA Annual Meeting Saturday, June 9, 2007,
Lake Gaston Baptist Church 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM (coffee and Danish at 9:30
AM) - Larry Jolly
Larry reminded the Directors of the procedures
for the Annual Meeting this Saturday. He also indicated the LGWSC will have
its Boating Safety Trailer out on the parking lot for public viewing and
education.
July Meeting
- The July meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 11, 2007. (The previous
Wednesday is the July 4th holiday.)
Other New Business -
Sarah Raible gave the information on “Story
time for children” at the area library in Brunswick County. The library is
located in Lawrenceville. Please call for more information.
