EMERGENCY WEATHER RADIO SERVICE (NOAA)

NOW ON THE AIR:  FREQUENCY - 162.500 mHz

At the request of Dr. Brent Smith of N.C. State University, the LGA has been working with him in an attempt to improve emergency weather radio service in the Lake Gaston area.  Below is a summary of a recent communication from Dr. Smith (8/10/03):

National Weather Service radio is on the air at Lake Gaston. Tune to 162.500 mHz and you'll find a very strong signal in our area.  Most boat radios should be equipped with NAOO weather radio receivers.

Routine NOAA programming includes current weather condition summaries and forecasts. Emergency information (severe weather, flooding, chemical spills, etc) is also announced. NOAA radio gives up to the second information on dangerous weather such as severe thunderstorms, large hail, ice storms, damaging winds, tornadoes, and flash floods. Receiver prices depend on features.

Hopefully the fire department and other emergency responders will be getting these, and it's a good idea to have one in your home, too.

Simple models start from about $20 up. Receivers with a tone-alarm (notifies you of emergency warning even if the radio is turned off) start at about $40. Manufacturers include (just to name a few ... there are many) ...
